What's the most common selection for hose retainer size? I'd like to use this with an AL40 stage bottle, for an upcoming Tec 40 course.

It's a matter of personal preference. The 4"" will have a more secure hold, while the 1"" is easier to manipulate (especially with gloves). If you are just starting out and not diving in heavy current or rubbing your bottle against cave walls, I'd recommend the 1"".
