Is this suit good for open water swimming? I'm looking for something that won't chafe under my arms.

Hello Mary! This top could certainly be used for open water swimming. It is equivalent to a 2mm neoprene wetsuit in its insulation properties, without being made of neoprene (which is good for those with neoprene allergies).
